The easiest way to describe this book is to say that this is the story of Francie Nolan growing up in Brooklyn.
What I liked:
*I really enjoy well done coming-of-age stories, and I felt that this one fit.
*There was no perfect-ending love story, which is a plus for me. (That story line is old hat.)
*The ugly parts of life in Brooklyn were not breezed through. Junk collection, rape, murder, still born children were all included.
*Francie has a lot of character.
Things that I didn't like so much:
*The plot doesn't move terribly quickly, and this story is not intensely designed. (Not a page-turner.)
*All problems were pretty much sorted out by marrying up.
*This is almost a rags-to-riches story, and I don't like those much.
I would recommend this book to anyone with the attention span for it.
