Oh, do I wish that books like this were still being written!
Nat Bowditch is from a sailing family that has come to hardship, and this hardship plays out on him. He struggles through circumstances that no one in this era can imagine and studies hard along the way, learning Latin, astronomy, French, mathematics, navigation, surveying... He works through his hardships by 'ash breeze', meaning that he's hard at work rowing the whole way.
This book is about a mathematical genius and his life. I very highly recommend this book.
