I did not have high expectations for Dairy Queen, and I was very pleassantly surprised to read a unique book in the down-to-Earth voice of D.J. Shwenk, a teenage girl who does most of the work on her family's farm since her dad's accident. D.J. has three brothers; the older two are local football legengs, one of which went on to play pro football. When the smug, whiny Quaterback from a rival team shows up to both help around the farm and strengthen up for the new season, D.J. doesn't quite know how to handle it. She ends ups helping her rival train for his upcoming season, and all the training helps D.J. realize that maybe she could go out for the team too...
D.J.'s narration is matter-of-fact and charming, and her decision to play football feels like the natural choice, nothing is forced or fake in the story, and I really enjoyed watching D.J. better herself. I would recommend this book.
