In fact, it’s really annoying to see them terribly offend and discriminate against their supposedly beloved child – and, notably, the fact that I had the feeling the author means it in a humorous way! And that’s the main problem, in my opinion: Writing this story, John Boyne seemed to be of two minds too often, being indecisive about whether to take his topic seriously or not, about the genre (children’s book, book for young people or for adults) and other things.
