Boring but cozy. Biggest problem is the structure: following a main character for the half the book before he connects to the story. Also, not a fan of the convenience and unrealistic sentimentality of the twist.

This book was so, SO boring. 😅 I knew from chapter one this was just not something I’d be interested in. The concept of the sentient octopus drew me in, but it was not really a fantastical thing at all. Overall, I just was not interested and only finished because I’m reading this to review the film adaptation. It would be an amazing read for people who love cozy character portrait pieces and don’t need much in the way of fast-paced plot, twists and turns, or speculative elements. The writing was great, characters made sense, and the story was consistent. It just was NOT for me.

If you need a wholesome book about family and the things we often lose, and find in the midst of that journey, pick up this book stat. I loved Marcellus and getting to hear from his perspective. Tova was a great old lady walking through a lot of loss, but ultimately a great found family story unfolds for her.
