I keep hearing that this book is depressing and whatnot, but I found myself enjoying it immensely.
Likes:
*I enjoy a book that can bring me to tears.
*Tess is dutiful, and does as she should whenever she can.
*Tess of the d'Urbervilles is very readable. The story is told in plain English, and no BA in Literature is required in order to understand.
Dislikes:
*I was genuinely uncomfortable that Tess had to talk to Alec or be anywhere near him after what happened. He did his job, in that he gave me the creeps.

I remember when Angel showed his true colors , I just felt so badly for poor Tess. And I did cry when she was not allowed to bury her poor unnamed child in the cemetary. It had a very sad ending, but I wasn't depressed by the book as a whole.
