Grade 3-6-A serviceable, easy-to-read biography of the African-American civil-rights activist and feminist who was, in many ways, far ahead of her time. Swain recounts her subject's young years as the daughter of freed slaves just after the Civil War. Terrell's parents were successful in business, and even though they divorced, they supported their daughter's desire for an education.
