So I was kinda nervous to start this one. It was gifted to me by a friend who's recs I trust but so many times when a book is described as queer horror the queer feels forced. Like its just there for the label and the characters are just there to fulfill a requirement. La Sala's characters and writing felt so well thought out though. They feel like people and not just stereotypes. The story itself is also very well done. The creeping what is going on feeling is beautiful and while a lot of reviews complain about the cliffhanger like ending, it felt kinda perfect for a horror. Like, yes, there's room for another book, for the story to be built up and continued, but it also just works. There's a hope of Ollie and the Suds winning but also the horror of them not winning and the island vanishing. I'll absolutely be reading further books in this series if they come out and further books from this author.
