Empathy itself is a good thing. Without it we could not exist as a society. But just like anything when taken too far it can be a bad thing.
For example if my roommate gets fired I can have empathy and not require them to pay their rent on time (covering it myself) but it becomes bad when that person does not get a job and continues to have me pay the rent alone because boohoo they got fired (not a great example but an example)
That is a very different example to what Stuckey writes about but and example of why I agree that empathy in many cases has gotten toxic and overused
