Alex Michaelides

Compared to Alex's two other books, which I absolutely adored, this one was harder to get into and it never really took off for me. I don't even think the ending was all that interesting. It felt twisty for the sake of twisty rather than good storytelling.

I didn't need to know the color of EVERY character's pubic hair, but thanks anyway, I guess! It took about 3/4 of the way through for the story to actually get where it needed to go, and as soon as it got interesting, he decided to put in a rape scene that turned into body horror and a sexual scene involving an underage girl. To top it all off, the ending wasn't even satisfying. Yikes.

Any book that can pull off a twist like that without me guessing it gets 5 stars. Genuinely, from start to finish, one of the best books I have ever read.
